Silmara Emde is a creative soul, whose curiosity and endless energy to learn have led her to explore a multitude of ways to express her enthusiasm for a creative, colourful life. She is a multi-talented visual artist with an extensive background in graphic design and photography. She works and plays with a range of media on countless personal and professional projects: photography, web and print based graphic design,filmmaking, book making and all things paper, mixed-media, clay, and more. Silmara’s body of work has emerged from a profound desire to create and to give form to ideas in an organic way. Experimentation and empirical discovery have been key elements of her current artistic practice. She states, “I’m interested in playing with materials and techniques that I’m not very familiar with. This practice allows me to learn as I work, keeping my rational mind at bay while experiencing the joys (and sorrows) of being an eternal beginner. I find that maintaining the mindset of ‘not exactly knowing what I’m doing’ brings me freedom to avoid preconceptions and to play without expectations. My intention has been to find my authentic voice by letting go of assumptions and self-consciousness. I have allowed intuition to guide my process. I take inspiration from a variety of sources, but nature, and the folk art of my home country Brazil are the predominant ones at this moment.
Silmara has titled her exhibit Revisiting Creative Dreams. It will be on display until December 21, 2024.
