Elica Durbertson: Oddities and Curiosities.

Elica Durbertson is the artistic collaboration of Vernon artists Jessica Durham and Elijah Robertson. Eli and Jessica have been studio artists with the Gallery Vertigo since 2021. Since then they have had two members’ exhibit shows: “Rock, Paper, Scissors” and “Stark Raving Mad… about you!”

Jessica’s primary medium is collage, creating fantastical, thought-provoking, and even humorous works using cut and pasted photographs gathered from a variety of esoteric sources. Elijah’s style, however, is more abstract, using acrylic painting, airbrush techniques, and digital manipulation.

This October will mark the first show they will do together that has a more unified style. The show’s title reflects two distinct thematic components.

“Oddities” is a celebration of the dark and macabre. Using a variety of techniques including collage, digital painting, plaster moulding, and even sculpture, this show will celebrate Hallowe’en with a collection of works that will intrigue and possibly even disturb! Giving nods to pop culture, the exhibit hopes to explore cliches in horror as a genre and the general spookiness of the season.

The “Curiosities” theme is a tribute to vintage “cabinets of curiosity,” which were early collections blending art, science, and rare or exotic objects. Together these themes will provide a unique and unusual experience.
